Message: Ankhesepaten & the Hittites Author: - Ankhesepaten Amenhotep Date: Sep 9, 2000 10:27 It was my namesake Ankhesenamun, (who was known as Ankesepaten in the times of the heretic Akhenaten), who contacted the Hittites after her husband Tutankhamun died. She wrote to Shubbiluliuma, King of the Hittites, asking him to send a husband. We have Hittite records from the time, written by Shubbiluliuma's son, Mursil II. It was such an unusual occurrence, the Hittites suspected trickery. Ankhesenamun wrote "My husband is dead and I have no sons. People say you have many sons. If you send me one of your sons, he will become my husband, for it is repugnant to me to take one of my servants as husband." We believe perhaps that the "repugnant servant" may have been the commoner & future dictator Horemheb. The Hittite Prince Zannanza set out for Egypt, but was murdered by Horemheb, this leading to a state of war between the two nations. We know that Ankhesenamun ruled beside the elderly priest Ay for a time, but of her ultimate fate, nothing...
