Message: Rasna women and women's names Author: - Tuscus Sempronius Date: Jan 22, 1999 16:09 One piece of evidence of the comparatively high status of women that has always been quite telling for me is the abundance of proper names of women in the inscriptions and on tombs. While Roman women often made do with feminine versions of their father's names (Julia, Fabia, etc.) there seems to have been quite a number of unique Rasna women's names NOT derived from men's. I've been gathering Rasna names for some time (see my webpage for a list), and find this a good antidote to people who claim that "so little is known of the Etruscans." For me, names are magic: they're real, localizable to a specific place, and connect me powerfully to the past.
