Given the shifts and tides of Rasna power, I wonder what it was like to live in a city on the borders of empire which later retracted. Does anyone know anything in detail about Spina, Italy, where the Rasna, the Greeks, the Celts, and who know who else all mingled and traded? Apparently from what I've found out, the remains of the city is now mostly underwater, but it sounds like it resembled a rough, ancient Venice--canals opening onto the sea, blocks of houses, lively comings and goings, a major trade route for Greek merchants and goods into and out of northern Italy. Most of the books seem to be in Italian and not available in the U.S. But the clues are tantalizing. I'm curious what the social and ethnic balance was--whether it was a Rasna colony, or Greek, or just a sort of rough sea trading post without much government--an uneasy frontier station with merchants and their private mercenaries to keep order. When the merchants leave, the next most powerful group or opportunist war leader moves in with his band. If the Greeks were involved in any sort of regular trading, you'd think they'd want to garrison the area. Next: Italian texts ( - Ali Livius ) Previous: neat maps ( interested - Lilius Didius )
