H. Lawrence's 'Etruscan Places' pub.... Email this post to a friend! Message: Judgment Author: Grammarian - Messalina Lupus Date: Jun 22, 1999 10:19 First I must introduce myself and thank you for accepting me into this group. I am a budding art historian, with something more like a pathological interest in the Classical world (and pre-) than is probably healthy! I am also an instructor in art history and humanities. To look at some of the sculpture of the Etruscans, one might conclude that there was an element of fear in regards to death...perhaps one of the earliest references to Judgment in Western Art? Youth and the Demon of Death (c. 4th Century BC) is really the piece that I am thinking of. It shows a female "Demon" (later title -- she has wings...does not look at all ferocious, but very Classical?) holding a scroll, while "Youth" is sitting beside her glancing at the scroll which is out of his reach. Although the Egyptians depicted the scales that weighed the heart as Anpu looked on, these images do not hold the same connotation as the Etruscan piece does. My point? I just read the previous post, and I am not convinced that the Etruscans had such a quiet view about the afterlife...what may I read to gain more insight? Any suggestions? Thanks!
