Message: Puls Author: - Aulus Flaminius, Patron Date: Nov 15, 2000 02:42 The word polenta is derived or so I understand from the Latin puls...a sort of porridge that was prepared by the Roman army. It was not prepared from corn, maize, as of course it was unknown, but from millet, spelt or other grains. BTW, the British refer to many grains as corn which can be misleading. Now as to red hair there was, or at least there was at one time in the Royal Ontario Museum a mummy ( not embalmed but preserved by the desert sand ) of an ancient Eygptian woman who was apparently buried alive by her neighbours as a witch. She had red hair that remained red for 3000 years. Romans had red haired citizens among them...notably L.C. Sulla and many of the gens Claudia, including Claudius brother of the Lesbia immortalized by Catullus. The Berber people from North Africa are the only nomadic caucasian race. They have been in North Africa since the time of the Pharaohs and are mentioned by Egyptians. Red haired people are not uncommon among them, though as I myself observed unlike Europeans they will invariably have red hair and brown eyes...quite unusual. So though the origin of the Rasna is debated there is no reason to believe redheads would be nonexistant in my humble opinion Next: Flaming hair ( Lauchum - Camitlnas Tullius ) Previous: on matters ranging from red hair to polenta ( just wondering - tanaquil Lupus )
