Message: of chestnuts & chickpeas Author: Zilach Velathris - tanaquil Lupus Date: Dec 5, 2000 17:04 We really should have a category for Etruscan Landscapes, but since we don't... I sat under a chestnut tree in Etruria, eating my lunch, and wondered-- Did the Etruscans have chestnuts? Seems likely to me. And if they did, what did they do with them? Was it perhaps the basis for their "polenta"? Something like castagnaccio, perhaps? I should explain: I'm a member of The American Chestnut Foundation, which is attempting to bring back a nearly extinct tree, decimated by blight. The other thing is, I was with a group digging not far from the Cecina River. Hmm, I thought: Chickpea River? Nope, it was named for a guy called (Caecinia or somesuch?). However, did his name perhaps have anything to do with chickpeas? And did the Etruscans eat chickpeas?
